Westinghouse Electric Company and Community Nuclear Power, Ltd. (CNP) have entered into an agreement that aims to revolutionize the U.K.’s energy sector with the deployment of a fleet of AP300™ Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). This collaboration marks a significant step toward providing the U.K. with a new source of carbon-free, reliable electricity, with the first commercial operations expected by the early 2030s.
The Vision for U.K.’s First Privately-Financed SMR Fleet
The agreement sets the stage for the construction of four AP300 SMRs in the North Teesside region of Northeast England, an area experiencing rapid industrial and economic growth. With increasing demand for carbon-free energy in this region, the deployment of SMRs is seen as a key solution for both energy reliability and industrial support.
Strategic Partnerships for Site Development
CNP has teamed up with Jacobs and Interpath Advisory as strategic partners to secure a fully licensed site for the project, with a target completion date of 2027. The entire initiative is being funded privately, aligning with the U.K. Government’s “Alternative Routes to Market for New Nuclear Projects” consultation. This move is also complementary to Westinghouse’s participation in Great British Nuclear’s (GBN) SMR technology selection process.
Paul Foster, CEO of Community Nuclear Power, stated, “This project brings together Westinghouse’s proven technology and mature supply chain with our expertise in nuclear programme delivery. We are excited to work in North Teesside, where the industrial landscape is transforming.”
AP300™ SMR: A Proven Solution for the U.K.
Westinghouse’s AP300 SMR is uniquely suited for various applications, from grid generation to supporting industrial sites by producing clean energy, hydrogen, e-fuels, and even district heating. David Durham, Westinghouse President, Energy Systems, expressed his gratitude to CNP, emphasizing, “Our AP300 SMR is ideally suited not just to support grid generation but also for industrial sites, offering a clean and secure energy solution.”
A Technology Rooted in Experience
Launched in May 2023, the AP300 is the world’s only SMR based on the proven AP1000® technology, a Generation III+ reactor already in operation globally. This sets it apart from other SMRs still in development, which often rely on first-of-a-kind technologies and come with additional risks. Westinghouse’s approach leverages existing engineering, components, and a mature supply chain, which allows for streamlined licensing and deployment.
Why the AP300™ SMR Is the Future of Nuclear Energy
The AP300 SMR is expected to bring significant economic advantages due to its reliance on the already-operational AP1000 reactors, which have proven cost efficiency on three continents. The AP300 is currently under consideration by several customers in the U.K., Europe, and North America, further reinforcing its position as a leading solution in the global nuclear energy market.
Conclusion
This collaboration between Westinghouse and Community Nuclear Power promises to be a game-changer for the U.K.’s energy landscape. The AP300 SMR is not only a solution for grid reliability but also a potential powerhouse for industrial growth, hydrogen production, and sustainable heating solutions. As the U.K. moves toward a more carbon-free future, this partnership signifies a major milestone in the nation’s journey toward energy independence and sustainability.
